Tomkat Stitchery Whitney Thorndike Tank Sew Quick Easy

If you're searching for a beginner sewing pattern that doubles as a quick sewing project, you're going to love the Thorndike Tank from Cashmerette! Whether you're new to sewing or just want a speedy, satisfying make, this woven tank is packed with thoughtful design features that make it both flattering and easy to sew. I’ve already made two versions and I can tell you—it’s quickly become a wardrobe staple. You can watch my review here:

The Thorndike Tank is the July 2025 release from the Cashmerette Club, and it’s available to all membership tiers during the month of July. After that, it becomes exclusive to the All Access tier. If you're interested, I’ve got a *discount code* -- use TOMKAT10 for $10 off the All Access membership* for your first year. Details and more codes are listed on the RESOURCES page.

This pattern comes in sizes 0–32 with cup sizes C-H, making it easy to get a great fit right out of the envelope. Featuring French darts, a bias-bound armhole, a faced neckline, and a sweet keyhole back closure, this top is the kind of project that helps you build skills without overwhelming you. It’s a great example of a quick sewing project that also has big wardrobe impact. Plus, I’ve filmed a complete sew-along, perfect if you're the type who appreciates a little hand-holding through each step.

After I cut out my second version, I finished sewing it in just 45 minutes—yep, start to finish (not counting cutting). That’s what makes this tank such a gem: it’s fast, easy, and looks great in so many different fabrics. I’ve made mine in linen blends and cotton gingham, but you could also try rayon, lightweight denim, or even quilting cotton if you have scraps to use up. It’s an ideal scrap buster or a smart way to use up that small cut of special fabric you’ve been saving.

This beginner sewing pattern includes two lengths: a cropped version (perfect with high-waisted pants or skirts) and a hip-length version if you prefer more coverage. It's incredibly versatile—you can dress it up with a bias skirt or go casual with linen shorts or jeans. I’m even planning to add scallops to the hem of my next version for a fun twist.

You can also get creative with visible facings or contrast bias tape, use your favorite embroidered fabrics, or even add detail using your embroidery machine. One of my favorite ideas? Embroidering the hem facing and sewing it to the outside for a chic and unique detail.

Need help pattern matching your fabric for this or other projects? Don’t forget to check out my Mini Course on Fabric Print Matching—a great resource if you’re working with stripes, plaids, or bold prints. It’ll walk you through all the steps so your seams align beautifully, even around darts and curves.

Looking for your next quick sewing project that won’t end up stuffed in your UFO pile? The Thorndike Tank is an absolute winner. Great fit, style flexibility, and sew-it-in-an-afternoon ease—what more could you want?
