Whitney Tomkat Stitchery Sewing Shorts Patterns

Summer sewing is in full swing over here, and today I’m diving into one of my most-worn warm weather essentials: shorts! Whether you're new to sewing garments or already working on your summer sewing capsule wardrobe, shorts can be a fantastic way to practice pant fitting with less fabric and less stress. I’ve pulled together ten patterns—including knit lounge styles, tailored favorites, and even activewear—along with some tips on what body shapes they may suit best. These are all patterns I’ve either made myself or sewn for others, and I hope this gives you ideas for your own sewing plans. And if fit is a challenge for you, don’t forget I have a mini-course to  help you choose pattern companies based on your body measurements!

You can watch the video version of my suggestions here:

Pattern Emporium Just Peachy Shorts*

If you’re looking for comfortable shorts sewing pattern, this knit pair is a favorite. The design includes optional back darts, but I’ve also made a version with a wider waistband instead—and both are incredibly cozy. Pattern Emporium is especially great for petite sewists, and the fit is spot-on. These are perfect for lounging or running errands in style.

Swim Style Karla Shorts

This elastic-waist pattern comes with a matching lounge top, but the shorts shine on their own. While the pattern doesn’t include pockets, it’s easy to add them using the side seams. The relaxed shape makes this one of the most flexible shorts sewing pattern for a range of figures. If you’re in between sizes, adjusting the elastic is usually all that’s needed.

Itch to Stitch Belize Shorts*

This is my go-to for a polished but wearable summer short. With multiple views (flat front, pleated, even a skort), this shorts sewing pattern is incredibly versatile. They include roomy pockets and are drafted with a straighter waist-to-hip ratio—ideal if you don’t want to fuss with a ton of adjustments. I have several in my closet and wear them constantly!

Closet Core Pietra Shorts

The Pietra shorts blend tailoring and comfort with a flat front, elastic back, and angled pockets. I needed to tweak the rise and fit for my own pair, but they were an instant win for my daughter’s curvier shape. This shorts sewing pattern is especially nice in linen and are easily adaptable for a pear or hourglass figure. Bonus: they look elevated while feeling super comfy.

Megan Nielsen Dawn Jean Shorts

If you're into vintage-inspired denim, the Dawn pattern is your dream come true. It offers zip or button flies and different leg shapes for a custom look. I had to adjust the waist shaping for my body, but they were a dream fit for my daughter. This shorts sewing pattern is are ideal if you’re diving into non-stretch denim for the first time.

Deer and Doe Goji Shorts

Perfect for lightweight fabrics like gauze and linen, the Goji Shorts are relaxed and easy to wear. They’re drafted for a pear shape, so if you’ve got a smaller waist and fuller hips, these will likely fit beautifully with minimal tweaks. I’ve made matching sets for my daughter, and they’ve stayed in her wardrobe for seasons.

Love Notions Glissando Shorts*

These start as a traditional button-fly design but can easily be modified—I've done both a zip fly and added elastic to the back for comfort. I also used the “full belly front” option, which offers more room exactly where I need it. The fit is structured but still flexible, making this one of the most adaptable shorts sewing pattern in my stash. Plus, the red pair I made is a total summer staple.

True Bias Lander Shorts

The Lander Shorts feature a high waist, exposed button fly, and tons of style. There's even an expansion pack to make them zip-fly if you prefer. They work well for straighter figures or those who want a subtle curve through the hip. This shorts pattern offers a cool retro vibe while still being modern and wearable.

Seamwork Dorian Shorts*

With elastic at the sides and a smooth waistband in the front and back, the Dorian Shorts are designed for ease and style. Seamwork patterns are drafted for a taller height (5'9"), so they’re especially great if you’re long-waisted or tall. Even though I’m 5’2”, I just shorten the rise and they work great. This shorts sewing pattern is high on my list to sew in breezy linen this season.

Greenstyle Stride Shorts

Though technically a leggings pattern, I’ve used the Stride pattern to make my favorite bike-length shorts. They don’t ride up, have flattering seam lines, and are perfect for working out, gardening, or hot summer days. If you’re looking for a pattern that support an active lifestyle, this one is a winner. It’s also my go-to for managing fluctuating waist size thanks to autoimmune flares.
