Sewing a Disney Vacation Wardrobe
If you've ever wondered what to sew for a vacation in a hot, humid climate, this project might give you a few ideas. I'm heading to Disney World in August, which means long days, plenty of walking, afternoon rain showers, and more humidity than I'm used to. Instead of packing ready-to-wear, I'm sewing an entire vacation wardrobe designed specifically for those conditions—and every piece will continue to earn its place in my closet long after the trip is over.
Whether you're planning a Disney vacation, a tropical getaway, or simply want comfortable activewear for everyday life, fabric choice is going to make all the difference. Read on or watch the video:
The Challenge: Sewing for Disney in August
August in Orlando is hot, humid, and unpredictable. Between six full days in the parks, afternoon thunderstorms, and miles of walking, I knew this wardrobe needed to prioritize comfort above everything else.
This trip is especially meaningful for our family. Disney has always been one of our favorite vacations, and after losing my mom last fall, it felt important for all of us—including my dad—to make this trip together. That made me want to sew clothes that would let me focus on making memories instead of worrying about being uncomfortable.
Why am I skipping a traditional capsule wardrobe?
Normally I love sewing capsule wardrobes where everything mixes and matches. This trip is different. In Florida's August heat, I know I'll want a fresh outfit each day, so I'm planning one complete outfit for every park day while keeping everything within the same color palette.
Choosing Fabrics for Florida Weather
When you're sewing for extreme heat, the fabric matters just as much as the pattern.
For this wardrobe, I wanted fabrics that would:
- Dry quickly after rain showers or water rides
- Wick moisture away from the body
- Stay lightweight and breathable
- Hold up to long days of walking
To help narrow down my choices, I reached out to Kayla at Surge Fabrics*. Athletic fabrics are one of Surge's specialties, and she recommended several lightweight performance fabrics that coordinate beautifully together.
My palette includes camel, coral, olive, mustard, and sunset-inspired shades that will work together throughout the trip.
What fabrics are best for a hot-weather vacation?
For destinations like Disney World, moisture management is key. Lightweight stretch wovens* are ideal for shorts because they dry quickly, while breathable athletic knits* and cotton modal jerseys make comfortable tops that won't feel heavy after hours in the heat. Choosing fabrics based on how they'll perform—not just how they look—is one of the best ways to create clothing you'll actually enjoy wearing.
Outfit Formula #1: Auckland Shorts + Boxy Tee
The first three outfits all follow the same formula: GreenStyle Auckland Shorts paired with the GreenStyle Boxy Tee.
I'm sewing three pairs of Auckland Shorts in lightweight stretch woven athletic fabrics* using the longer inseam and slant pockets. I'll also sew built-in briefs into each pair, making them even more practical for travel.
For the tops, I'm making three short-sleeved Boxy Tees in a high-hip length using lightweight cotton modal slub knit*.

Why choose cotton modal for travel?
Cotton modal is soft, breathable, and has beautiful drape without feeling heavy. It makes an excellent T-shirt fabric for warm weather because it stays comfortable while maintaining a relaxed, easy fit.
Outfit Formula #2: Rally Skirts and Performance Tops
For the second half of the trip, I'm adding a little variety with several GreenStyle Rally Skirts, which include built-in shorts for all-day comfort.
I'll pair them with another Boxy Tee, a Tiny Tee with its fun keyhole back detail, and the Bobby Brami for a sleeveless option with built-in support.
Everything is sewn from lightweight athletic knits chosen for comfort, breathability, and ease of movement.

Are athletic fabrics only for the gym?
Not at all. Modern performance fabrics make wonderful everyday clothing. These skirts and tops will be just as useful for walking, running errands, and casual summer days as they will be at Disney.
A Dress for the Evenings
I'm also sewing the GreenStyle Corset Dress, which includes a built-in sports bra. I'll add coordinating shorts underneath so it's comfortable for walking through the parks while still looking a little more dressed up.
Having a dress gives me another option if we head back to the hotel for a break before returning to the parks in the evening.

Should you pack different clothes for the evening?
Not necessarily, but having one or two fresh options can make a long day much more enjoyable. After hours in the Florida heat, changing into clean clothes before heading back out sounds like a pretty good idea.
The Little Details Matter
Along with the clothing itself, I'm sewing a few extra sports bras, packing moisture-wicking socks, rotating between two pairs of athletic shoes, and bringing waterproof sandals for those inevitable afternoon rainstorms.
What should you sew first for a hot-weather vacation?
If you're short on time, start with the pieces you'll wear the most. Comfortable shorts, breathable tops, and supportive undergarments will make the biggest difference. Once those essentials are finished, you can always add dresses or other fun pieces if time allows.
A Wardrobe That Works Beyond Vacation
Although Disney inspired this sewing plan, none of these garments are vacation-only pieces. Every pattern I've chosen fits naturally into my everyday wardrobe, whether I'm heading to the gym, running errands, or enjoying another hot summer day.
That's one of my favorite ways to approach sewing—creating garments for a specific need while making sure they'll continue to earn their place in my closet long after the trip is over.
