Sew the Look: Easy Cotton Poplin Pants

Two women wearing cotton poplin pants made with indian block print fabric

Have you ever seen a pair of ready-to-wear pants and thought, "I could make those!"? That's exactly what happened when my sister and cousins started sending me pictures of cotton poplin pants that were going viral on social media. They were cute, comfortable, and versatile, but they also came with a $128 price tag!

When I showed them to Jenni, her first reaction was, "Those are outdoor pajama pants!" And she wasn't entirely wrong. With their elastic waistband, relaxed wide legs, and lightweight cotton fabric, they certainly have that comfortable pajama feel. But after seeing how my sister was styling hers, we decided these pants deserved a closer look.

What started as a spontaneous idea turned into one of the easiest sewing projects we've done together. We found a fantastic pattern, scored some beautiful cotton poplin on sale, and each made a pair of pants in an afternoon. Here's how we recreated this trendy ready-to-wear look!

The Inspiration: $128 Cotton Poplin Pants

Our inspiration came from the Cadets Everyday Poplin Pant. My sister had ordered a couple of pairs, and my cousins were all talking about them.

These pants feature an elastic waistband, hidden inseam pockets, and a relaxed wide-leg silhouette that hits around the ankle bone. They're simple, comfortable, and surprisingly versatile.

My sister has been wearing hers to work in a business-casual environment, but they look equally appropriate with a T-shirt or sweatshirt for the weekend.

At $128 per pair, though, I knew we could recreate the look for significantly less. The challenge was finding a sewing pattern with just the right amount of width in the legs.

Choosing the Right Sewing Pattern

Pattern Emporium Vacation Vibes Palazzo Pants

After discussing our plans with members of our Pattern Fitting 101 community, several people suggested the Pattern Emporium Vacation Vibes Palazzo Pants*.

I'd sewn this pattern before in a sparkly fabric, so I was already familiar with it. When Jenni and I looked through the options, we realized it had almost everything we needed.

Pattern features include:

  • Subtle or dramatic wide-leg silhouettes
  • High-rise waistband option
  • Multiple waistband widths
  • Hidden inseam pockets
  • Short, regular, and tall cutting lengths
  • Elastic waistband
  • Beginner-friendly construction
  • Projector-friendly pattern files

For our recreation, we chose the subtle wide leg, high rise, hidden inseam pockets, and 1½-inch elastic waistband.

The subtle wide leg was especially important. We wanted that relaxed silhouette without creating too much volume, particularly since we were using cotton poplin rather than a fabric with more drape.

One of my favorite things about Pattern Emporium patterns is the quality of the drafting and instructions. They're thorough and easy to follow, making this a great choice for beginner sewists.

Choosing the Fabric: Block Print Cotton Poplin

Why Cotton Poplin Works for These Pants

While browsing a sale at Core Fabrics, I spotted this beautiful Feather Block Print Cotton Poplin in Cardinal, Chartreuse, and Black.

Jenni loves Indian block prints and has quite a collection in her handmade wardrobe. When I saw this fabric, I knew she'd love it, too!

I ordered two meters for each of us, and because the fabric was on sale, each two-meter cut cost approximately $25.60. Compared to the $128 ready-to-wear inspiration, that was quite a bargain!

Cotton poplin works beautifully for this style because it has enough body to maintain the shape of the pant legs without feeling heavy.

It's also a great fabric for beginners because it's stable, easy to cut, and generally easy to press and sew.

One thing to consider is that cotton poplin doesn't have the same fluid drape as rayon or viscose. That's why the subtle wide-leg option worked so well. A more dramatic leg in this fabric might have created more volume than we wanted.

When choosing fabric for wide-leg pants, think about the finished silhouette you're trying to achieve. A fabric with more drape will create a softer, flowing look, while cotton poplin provides a slightly more structured appearance.

Sewing the Vacation Vibes Pants

A Quick, Beginner-Friendly Afternoon Project

Once we had our fabric and pattern selected, it was time to sew!

One of the best things about this pattern is its simplicity. There are only four main pattern pieces: front leg, back leg, pocket, and waistband.

That's it! No zipper, buttons, or interfacing required.

Jenni printed and assembled her pattern in approximately 30 minutes and spent another 20 minutes cutting her fabric. I used the projector file for mine, making preparation even faster.

We got together on a Friday afternoon and realized we hadn't sewn together since the spring. We spent most of our time chatting and catching up, which made the afternoon even more enjoyable.

I finished my pants in about an hour, while Jenni's took closer to two hours.

This is the perfect project when you want something satisfying without complicated construction. We even joked that you could finish these pants during a football game!

Fitting and Adjustments

One of the reasons this project came together so quickly was that neither of us needed significant fitting adjustments.

The Vacation Vibes pattern recommends choosing your size based on your hip measurement, making size selection straightforward.

Whitney's Fit and Adjustments

I made a size 10 and was really pleased with the fit straight out of the pattern.

My adjustments included:

  • Size: 10, based on my hip measurement
  • Length: Used the short cutting line
  • Crotch adjustment: Scooped out the back crotch curve by ā…œ inch, which is a common adjustment for me
  • Hem: Shortened the finished length to hit at my ankle bone
  • Waistband: Used the 1½-inch waistband option

I wanted my pants to have the slightly cropped look of the ready-to-wear inspiration, so I adjusted the hem after seeing where my sister's pants hit.

I absolutely love the shape of the finished leg. It's relaxed and comfortable without being excessively wide.

Jenni's Fit and Adjustments

Jenni made a size 14 based on her hip measurement and didn't need any fitting adjustments.

Her construction choices included:

  • Size: 14, based on her hip measurement
  • Length: Used the tall cutting line
  • Fit adjustments: None
  • Waistband: Cut the 2-inch waistband option but inserted 1½-inch elastic

That last detail created a slight paperbag effect at the top of her waistband. It wasn't exactly what she intended, but it turned out to be a fun design detail!

We were both impressed with how well the pattern fit and how comfortable our finished pants felt.

How to Style Cotton Poplin Pants

From Casual Weekends to Business Casual

One of our biggest questions was how to style these pants without looking like we were wearing pajamas in public!

The answer really comes down to what you pair with them.

Jenni initially thought hers would be strictly weekend pants, perfect with a sweatshirt. But after experimenting with different outfits, she realized they could work for so many more occasions.

She tried pairing hers with a button-up shirt and blazer for a polished look, as well as a sweater for something more relaxed.

I'm planning to wear mine with sweaters, loafers, and button-up shirts throughout the fall. I recently purchased a pair of faux alligator loafers that I think will look fantastic with these pants!

A few styling ideas include:

  • Casual weekends: A simple T-shirt and sneakers
  • Business casual: A button-up shirt, blazer, and loafers
  • Fall outfits: A cozy sweater with flats
  • Summer evenings: A concert T-shirt and denim jacket
  • Travel: A comfortable knit top and slip-on shoes

I can also see these becoming a great option for Thanksgiving. They're comfortable enough for lounging but can easily be dressed up with a pretty sweater.

And because cotton poplin is lightweight, these pants will transition beautifully into warmer weather. I'm already planning to pack mine for Florida in February!

Are the Pattern Emporium Vacation Vibes Pants Good for Beginners?

Absolutely! This is one of those projects that delivers a lot of satisfaction without requiring advanced sewing skills.

The elastic waistband eliminates complicated closures, and the straightforward construction lets you focus on basic sewing techniques. The inseam pockets are also a great opportunity to practice a useful garment-sewing skill.

Final Thoughts: A Ready-to-Wear Look for Less

I couldn't be happier with how our cotton poplin pants turned out!

The Pattern Emporium Vacation Vibes pattern was an excellent choice for recreating the silhouette, and the block print cotton poplin gave our pants plenty of personality.

I also love that we spent an afternoon sewing together. Sometimes the simplest projects are the most enjoyable, especially when you share the experience with a friend.

I'm already considering another pair, and Jenni is thinking about experimenting with a slightly tapered leg next time.

If you've been wanting to try sewing pants but feel intimidated by fitting or complicated construction, this is a wonderful place to start. With just a few pattern pieces and some beautiful fabric, you can create a comfortable, stylish pair of pants in an afternoon.

And who knows? Those "outdoor pajama pants" might become one of the most versatile pieces in your handmade wardrobe!
