TomKat Stitchery Whitney Sew Button Up Shirts

As we head into the holiday season, so many of us start sewing for others, and button-up shirts make incredible, heartfelt gifts. Today I’m sharing tips from my own experience sewing shirts for my college-age kids, plus some fitting strategies that make all the difference when you’re sewing for someone you love. Read on or watch here:

Why We Sew for Others

There’s something really special about gifting a handmade garment, especially when you sew button-up shirt styles that fit beautifully. Sewing isn’t just a creative outlet; it’s a skill that lets you help someone feel comfortable, confident, and seen. A well-fitted shirt can do more for someone’s self-esteem than any store-bought piece ever could.

When you know how to fit your own clothes and read wrinkles, you’re already halfway to fitting others well. And the joy of giving someone a garment that fits them—not some imaginary “standard”—is truly priceless.

Why Button-Up Shirts Make Great Gifts

I love sewing button-up shirts. Truly my favorite thing! They’re therapeutic to sew, endlessly customizable, and work for nearly every personal style. Whether you sew button-up shirt designs with a convertible collar or a classic collar + stand, they’re a gift that feels elevated and thoughtful.

If you're new to shirts, my Shirt Making 101 class walks you through every detail:

  • Convertible vs. traditional collars
  • Sleeve plackets & cuffs
  • Construction order
  • Pressing
  • Fit considerations

It’s all in there so you can go from intimidated to confident.

How to Fit When You Sew Button-Up Shirt Gifts

When you’re sewing for others—especially surprise gifts—the key is choosing a pattern company that already aligns with the recipient’s body shape. After you’ve sewn button-up shirt patterns (or any garment) for someone once or twice, you naturally learn the size they wear in that brand, the adjustments they need, and how their proportions differ from the pattern draft.

Fitting your own body first helps you recognize wrinkles and diagnose issues more easily on others. Kids are simple rectangles, while adults have curves and preferences that require a bit more thought. Matching your loved one to a pattern company that suits their proportions makes all the difference.  My son fits Wardrobe By Me perfectly, while my daughter is an ideal match for Charm Patterns and their cup-size ranges.

After you sew a garment or two for another person, you will learn which size fits them best, what usual alterations you need to make, if they need bust shaping or additional torso length.  And, you will also gain speed in sewing button-up shirts without constant try-ons.

The Shirts I Made This Season

Wardrobe by Me Tropical Shirt (for my son)

This project is made from quilting cotton he picked out months ago. I’ve sewn this pattern for him before, so I know the size to sew, the length adjustment he needs, and that he likes this style. (It took less than 1.5 hours to sew! Why do we put things off again?)

This pattern features:

  • Convertible collar
  • Two pockets
  • Vintage bamboo buttons from my stash that really emphasize 🌴Tropical 🌴

Even on a mannequin that does not have his shape, I can see the print matching worked beautifully.

Charm Patterns Marlene Blouse (for my daughter)

My daughter doesn’t dress vintage, but she loves a vintage-inspired silhouette—especially anything that highlights her waist and bust shape. The Charm Patterns Marlene Blouse has the waist-defining shaping, gorgeous pleating into the bust, and the perfect tuck-in length that she loves.

She’s a size 6 with the G-cup, and Charm Patterns consistently fits her with zero alterations. For someone who could never buy a ready-to-wear button-up shirt that fits, being able to Sew Button-up Shirt styles just for her is one of the biggest gifts I can give.

Finished with:

  • A purple cotton shirting from my stash
  • Silk bias tape at the hem
  • Five vintage flower buttons I’d been saving

It’s feminine, polished, and totally her.

How to Surprise Loved Ones with Handmade Shirts

If you want to Sew Button-up Shirt gifts as a surprise, try this strategy:

  1. Sew one “trial garment” first
It doesn’t have to be a muslin—just a wearable first attempt.
  2. Note the needed alterations
Torso length, shoulder width, sleeve length, bust adjustments, etc.
  3. Stick to that same pattern company
Once you know their fit, you’re golden.
  4. Then you can confidently sew future shirts without try-ons.

This is how you make a holiday surprise actually work!

A Closer Look at the Mental Side of Sewing for Yourself and Others

One of my favorite things about sewing—whether you Sew Button-up Shirt styles or simple tees—is what it does for mental health. When clothes fit you (and the people you love), you feel good in your body. You stop believing the lie that the body is the problem.

Being able to give that to my daughter especially… it’s huge. She’s never had to think her body is “wrong”—she just knows that ready-to-wear doesn’t fit everyone, and that handmade makes the difference.

❤️❤️❤️That is a lifelong gift.❤️❤️❤️
