Essential Sewing Tools Every Sewing Room Needs

When you spend a lot of time sewing, you start to realize just how much the right tools can transform a creative space. Recently, while working on her Style Arc Teddy shirt for the Precious Fabric Challenge, Jenni ran out of interfacing and popped into my sewing studio to grab some. Of course, once she was there, she couldn’t help but notice how many things in the room she would love to bring home. My space is colorful and bright—it’s basically my personality in a room. Jenni’s own sewing space is in the basement and still evolving, so she walked around making a mental list of tools that would really make her sewing life easier. Today, she’s sharing that list! Read on or watch here:
1. Interfacing from Thermoweb
Jenni first went in for interfacing. Specifically, the Heat n Bond Medium Weight Weft Fusible Interfacing* from Thermoweb. She uses this constantly for garment sewing, and it’s one of those supplies she always seems to run out of. If you’re in the same boat, you’ll find the link to it on the Resources page.
2. Kai Scissors
Scissors may seem basic, but trust Jenni—Kai scissors* are game changers. They’re lightweight, incredibly sharp, and easy on the hands. I have the professional 7000 series set, and Jenni was so impressed she had to get her own. If you’re still using bargain scissors, these are the upgrade to put on your wish list.
3. Oliso Iron
Jenni used to think all irons were the same. Wrong! The Oliso iron* has incredible steam power, is lightweight, and features clever little feet that lift when you set it down. It helps to save your wrists from fatigue. It even comes in fun colors like teal and tangerine. After using this iron side-by-side with a discount one, she knew she’d never go back.
4. Snap Press
Snaps can be fiddly, but my DZN Tools snap press makes adding them a breeze. Jenni has used it on coats and seen me use it on shirts, and it takes just seconds to get perfect results. It’s an investment, but one you’ll use for years (and maybe even pass down).
5. Arrow Sewing Chair
Like many sewists, Jenni borrowed a basic office chair for years. But the Arrow sewing chair* changed everything. It adjusts in height, provides excellent low back support, comes in fun sewing-themed fabrics, and even has hidden storage (where I keep my chocolate stash!). Don’t forget, there’s a coupon code TOMKAT20 for 20% off plus free shipping at Arrow Sewing Furniture.
6. Honeywell Artist Lamp
Good lighting makes all the difference, especially if you’re sewing in a darker space like Jenni’s basement. The Honeywell 05D01 artist lamp* is truly night-and-day compared to her old setup. It has warm and cool settings, adjustable brightness, and makes matching thread and fabric so much easier. If you’ve ever struggled sewing navy or black in winter light, this is a lifesaver.
Jenni might not be able to pocket my lamp or chair (though she was tempted!), but she’s definitely adding these tools to her wish list as she continues building her dream sewing space. What about you? What are the must-have tools in your sewing room?
