3 NYC Fashion Trends to Sew

Whitney TomKat Stitchery NYC Fashion trends matched to sewing patterns

I just got back from a long weekend in New York City, and I have to say—there’s nothing quite like walking through neighborhoods, popping into boutiques, and quietly people-watching to get inspired. It’s a completely different fashion world from the Midwest, but that’s part of what makes it so fun.

So today I’m sharing three trends I saw everywhere—plus sewing patterns you can use to recreate them in your own wardrobe. Read on or watch here:

✨ Overall Trends I Noticed

Before we dive into specifics, there were two big themes showing up everywhere:

  • A strong 90s influence – think tailored shapes, slightly relaxed fits, and understated styling
  • Heirloom details – embroidery, pintucks, cutwork, and decorative stitching are having a moment

If you’ve been itching to play with decorative stitches on your machine, this is your sign.

1. Tailored Bermuda Shorts

These were everywhere. Not just casual denim cutoffs—but more polished, tailored shorts in linen and trouser fabrics.

Think:

  • Mid-thigh to just above the knee
  • Pleats or structured fronts
  • Sometimes elastic in the back for comfort
  • Styled with everything from sneakers to loafers (yes… even with socks)

There’s a very subtle throwback vibe here—like polished 90s vacation outfits.

Sewing Tip:
Play with the hem length. That sweet spot is different for everyone, and it makes all the difference in how flattering these feel.

2. Cropped, Boxy Button-Up Shirts

This one felt like the easiest trend to jump into—and honestly, the most wearable.

These shirts are:

  • Slightly cropped (but wearable-cropped, not teeny-tiny)
  • Boxy and relaxed
  • Often worn untucked
  • Perfect for pairing with matching bottoms (sets are still going strong)

I kept spotting these styled effortlessly, and they pair beautifully with both shorts and barrel pants.

Patterns to Try:

If you’ve been wanting to dip your toe into shirt-making, this is a great entry point—especially with relaxed, forgiving silhouettes.

3. Barrel-Leg Pants

Okay—this one might be the most divisive, but it’s definitely trending.

Barrel-leg pants have:

  • Volume through the leg
  • A slight taper at the ankle
  • A sculptural shape that adds interest to an outfit

And they were everywhere—from subtle versions to more exaggerated silhouettes.

Why I love this trend:
It’s actually really flattering if you want to balance proportions—especially if you carry more fullness in your bust. It adds visual weight to the lower half and creates a nice shape.

🧵 How I’m Planning to Use These Trends

What really clicked for me on this trip was how well these trends work together.

I’m already planning a matching set:

  • A linen boxy shirt
  • Paired with either tailored shorts or subtle barrel-leg pants

Something easy, wearable, and mix-and-match friendly for summer.

💭 Final Thoughts

Not every trend is going to be your thing—and that’s kind of the whole point.

The beauty of sewing is that you get to pick what works for your body, your lifestyle, and your personal style. You can take inspiration from what’s happening in places like New York City without feeling like you have to copy it exactly.

If anything, let this be a starting point. A little nudge to try something new—or reinterpret a trend in a way that feels like you.
