Whitney TomKat Stitchery Me Made May 2026

If you’ve ever needed a little nudge to reconnect with your sewing, Me Made May might be exactly what you’re looking for. This year, instead of going all in on big, ambitious projects, my focus is shifting toward something a little more meaningful: consistency, creativity, and enjoying the process again.  Read on or watch here:

What Is Me Made May?

Me Made May is a long-running sewing community challenge started by Zoe from @sozoblog (and it’s been around for well over a decade now!). The idea is simple:

You set a personal goal for the month of May that encourages you to engage with your handmade wardrobe.

That might look like:

  • Wearing one handmade garment every day
  • Styling older makes in new ways
  • Sewing something new each week
  • Or simply being more mindful about what you wear

There’s no “right” way to do it—which is exactly why it’s so fun.

Why Join Me Made May?

Even if your wardrobe is already full of handmade pieces, this challenge can still be surprisingly impactful.

It’s a chance to:

  • Reconnect with your creativity
  • Appreciate what you’ve already made
  • Identify gaps in your wardrobe
  • Try new techniques without pressure
  • Build a more intentional relationship with your sewing

And sometimes it’s just nice to have a little shared momentum with the sewing community.

My Personal Me Made May Challenge: 15 Minutes a Day

Instead of focusing on what gets made or worn, my personal goal is all about showing up consistently.

The goal:
Spend at least 15 minutes (at least) a day sewing.

That’s it.

And those 15 minutes can look like:

  • Hand stitching or embroidery
  • Trying a new seam finish
  • Working on a garment in small increments
  • Practicing a technique you’ve been curious about
  • Even just prepping or planning a project

This approach is less about output and more about refilling my creative cup—which, let’s be honest, we all need from time to time.

Exploring Heirloom Sewing Techniques

One area that’s especially inspiring to me right now is heirloom sewing.

Traditionally, this style focuses on garments meant to be treasured and passed down—often seen in children’s clothing—but the techniques translate beautifully into everyday wear.

Think:

  • Delicate hand embroidery
  • Smocking details
  • Fine tucks and lace inserts
  • Cutwork embroidery
  • Soft, intricate finishing techniques

Even adding a small detail—like hand stitching along a collar or incorporating a decorative panel—can completely elevate a garment.

You don’t have to master everything at once. This is the perfect month to experiment.

Sewing from Your Stash: A Frugal Twist

Another fun layer to consider this month is a stash-focused challenge. #SewFrugal26 hosted by @frugalisma and @theyorkshiresewgirl is going on right now too!

There’s a growing movement around sewing more intentionally by:

  • Using fabric you already own
  • Revisiting patterns in your collection
  • Getting creative with what you have on hand

It’s a great way to stretch your creativity and avoid unnecessary spending—while still ending up with pieces you love.

Sharing the Journey

If you enjoy a little accountability (or just want to see what others are doing), sharing your progress can make the experience even more fun.

Whether it’s:

  • Quick check-ins
  • Progress updates
  • Finished pieces at the end of the month

Documenting the journey adds another layer of motivation—and it’s always inspiring to look back on.  And don’t forget to tag me on Instagram @tomkat.stitchery so I can see what you are making!

Your Turn: What Will Your Me Made May Look Like?

That’s the beauty of Me Made May—it’s completely customizable.

Maybe your goal is to:

  • Sew a little every day
  • Finally try that technique you’ve been putting off
  • Wear your handmade pieces more intentionally
  • Or simply reconnect with why you love sewing in the first place

Whatever you choose, keep it doable and enjoyable.

Because at the end of the day, this isn’t about doing more—it’s about making space for creativity again.
