One Perfect T-Shirt Pattern = Dozens of Capsule Wardrobe Tops
There’s something magical about finding a tried-and-true sewing pattern that fits your body beautifully. Once you have it, the possibilities open up in ways you might not expect.
A great fitted t-shirt pattern can become the foundation of an entire handmade wardrobe. By simply changing the neckline, sleeve, fabric, or length, you can create dozens of different tops that all fit perfectly. It’s one of the easiest ways to build a versatile capsule wardrobe—whether you’re a minimalist or someone who loves a full closet of handmade clothes.
Today we’re talking about how the Cashmerette Concord T-Shirt* and Carlyle add-on pattern can work together to create an incredible variety of knit tops. Read on or watch here:
Why a Well-Fitting T-Shirt Pattern Is So Valuable
When you take the time to fit a t-shirt pattern properly, it becomes the base for so many garments.
A fitted tee can easily be:
- A layering piece under blazers or cardigans
- A casual everyday top
- A base for knit dresses
- A capsule wardrobe essential
Once the fit is dialed in, you can sew the same pattern repeatedly with confidence—simply adjusting style elements for variety.
Pulling out my own collection made me realize I had a full rainbow of t-shirts made from the same base pattern, each with slightly different details.
The Cashmerette Concord T-Shirt Pattern

- Short sleeve
- ¾ sleeve
- Long sleeve
- Optional sleeve bands
- Tab sleeve option

- Cropped and mid-hip lengths
When you combine the Concord and Carlyle pieces together, you can mix and match necklines, sleeves, and lengths to create around 80 different combinations.

My Favorite Fabrics for T-Shirts
Fabric choice makes a big difference in how a t-shirt looks and feels. These are my three favorite options:
Cotton Spandex Jersey
This is my go-to. It has structure, holds its shape, and doesn’t cling too tightly to the body.
Viscose or Rayon Spandex Jersey
These fabrics have more drape and feel softer and slinkier. They create a slightly dressier look but can feel clingier.
Modal Blends
Modal blends give you the best of both worlds—soft drape with a little more structure.

Where I Buy Cotton Spandex Jersey
Two of my favorite places to shop for t-shirt fabrics are:
- Minerva* – huge color selection
- Stylemaker Fabrics – excellent US-based source with many color options
Buying the same fabric in multiple colors is a great strategy when you’re sewing a core wardrobe staple like t-shirts.

Final Thoughts
A well-fitting t-shirt pattern might seem simple, but it can truly become one of the most powerful patterns in your sewing collection.
Once the fit is perfected, you can create endless variations—different fabrics, sleeves, necklines, and lengths—all from the same base pattern.
Whether you prefer a minimalist wardrobe or a rainbow of handmade tops, a great t-shirt pattern makes it easy to sew pieces you’ll actually wear.
And honestly… I can’t imagine my wardrobe without it.
