Behind the Seams: My Sewing Room Tour

Sometimes the best way to rediscover your sewjo is to start fresh—and that’s exactly what I did! After a hectic fall and a serious creative slump, I decided it was time for a full sewing room reset. With some help from my dad and Jenni, we deep cleaned, rearranged furniture, and even added a few new pieces to make my sewing space more functional and inspiring than ever.
In this updated sewing room tour, I’m sharing a look at both my sewing space and workroom, plus some of my favorite tools, furniture, and storage solutions—many of which come with exclusive discount codes you can find on the TomKat Stitchery Resources page. Read on or watch here:
🧵 The Sewing Room: A Space for Creativity
Big Mirror & Inspiration Board
I started with a large IKEA mirror—perfect for trying on garments—and a corkboard for brainstorming new video ideas. It’s a great visual tool for when Jenni and I are planning projects.
Machine Line-Up
 Here’s the current setup:
- My Juki Industrial machine for speed sewing.
- Bernina 790 Pro in my Arrow Sewing Laverne and Shirley Cabinet* for perfect ergonomic sewing.
- Bernina 850 Serger as my primary machine, with a Baby Lock Evolution as backup and I keep threaded with a different color so I don't have to swap spools often.
- Bernina 330 for travel and for Jenni to use when she’s here.
- Janome Coverstitch Machine stationed higher up for quick hemming jobs.

Each machine has its own dedicated spot, making it easy to move between them (especially with my Arrow sewing chair*. It's my favorite seat in the house!). I use IKEA desks and tables for the flexibility in the storage and surface (like holding my Oliso Mini Iron* and Wool Mats*).

Lighting That Changes Everything
The Honeywell lamp* has been a total game-changer. It brings bright, natural light into the space—amazing for detail work and even better during the darker months. From time to time, I have to track it down when Jenni moves it to her sewing space 😉.

Pressing Station Perfection
My pressing setup includes both my Oliso iron* and my gravity-fed industrial steam iron, each great for different fabric needs. Wool projects get the heavy steam treatment, while everyday sewing gets the Oliso’s precision.

Storage & Shelving
A new bookshelf (thanks to my dad!) houses my sewing books, pattern binders, and project bins—everything in its place and ready for action.
💻 The Workroom: Where Planning Happens
The adjoining workroom is where Jenni and I handle the technical side of things—editing, planning, and of course, cutting fabric.
Fabric Storage & Cutting Area
All my fabric is folded Marie Kondo–style on Container Store shelving—easy to see and access. My SewTites Magnetic Cutting System has been an amazing upgrade, and I keep the magnets organized on a thrifted cookie sheet (practical and cute!). I still have my non-magnetic cutting mat that I use as well.
Projector & Tools
I use a short-throw projector for cutting PDF patterns directly on fabric, saving time and paper. Everything from scissors to interfacing lives in labeled drawers for easy cleanup.
Finishing Touches
The space includes a handmade quilt from a dear student, a few in-progress garments, and a clothing rack for finished projects. And yes—the carpet is completely thread-free… for now!
✨ Why a Sewing Room Reset Matters
If your motivation to sew has gone missing, a deep clean or simple reorganization can make all the difference. Resetting your space helps clear mental clutter and reignite your excitement to create.
As the weather turns colder and the days shorter, it’s the perfect time to cozy up in your refreshed sewing space, cut out a few new projects, and let the creativity flow again.
