Prom Dresses, Glitter Bombs, and All the Feels
Hey friends! So I just wrapped up one of the most emotional makes of my sewing journey — prom outfits for both of my kids. Cue all the tears. My daughter’s senior prom just happened, and let me tell you, sewing her dress was a full-on glitter-filled adventure. I used the Hollywood Dress pattern by Gertie (a Patreon pattern) and paired it with stunning fabrics from Kiki Textiles — a mint green crepe-back satin and this wild silver glitter lace that shed everywhere. My house still looks like a disco ball exploded, but it was worth it. The pattern was actually pretty straightforward, but I made a few custom adjustments for fit. And oh — the rhinestone belt? A gift from my mentor’s stash. Hand-sewing that beast on took three hours, but when I saw my daughter light up in the final fitting, it was totally worth it.

Yes, I Made a Necktie Too (Because Apparently I’m That Mom Now)
My son decided last minute to go to prom and wanted a tie and pocket square to coordinate with his date's dress (who just happens to be one of my daughter’s best friends). So, of course, I dove into my stash and found a gorgeous fuchsia silk — pretty sure it also came from my mentor Joyce. I used the Sew Over It men’s tie pattern, and while it seemed like a simple project, that bias-cut silk was a slippery nightmare. It kept growing on me! But I wrangled it, added a TomKat Stitchery tag to the back, and even hand-stitched the whole length. For the pocket square, I did a full hand-rolled hem — like on those fancy Hermes scarves — while listening to an audiobook. Again, slow but so satisfying.

All the Feels and One More Dress to Go
Honestly, this whole prom project had me in my feelings. It marks the end of an era for us — senior year is wrapping up and graduation is just around the corner. Both kids are excited for what’s next, which helps this emotional mama’s heart a bit. I still have one more special garment to go: my daughter’s white graduation dress. But soon, I’ll be back to selfish sewing (hallelujah). If you’ve got prom or big events coming up, don’t be afraid to dive into the fancy fabric — just prepare for glitter in places you didn’t know glitter could go. 😉
