Sew Ready to Wear: 10 Winter Outfit Ideas You Can Make at Home
Today I’m sharing 10 winter-ready-to-wear looks that are all completely sewable—each paired with specific patterns and fabric ideas to help you recreate the vibe at home. This is one of my favorite types of videos to make every season because it blends real-life inspiration with practical sewing plans. These are outfits pulled straight from our Pinterest boards, and they’re full of cozy layers, plaids, statement knits, and just enough drama to keep winter dressing interesting. Read on or watch here:
Look #1: Plaid Wide-Leg Trousers + Cozy Cardigan
This first look was pinned by Jenni (who takes care of keeping me on track behind the scenes), and honestly—it perfectly sums up what all three members of Team TKS have been pinning lately. Think: plaid, comfy leisure-inspired pieces, and bold winter color.
Wide-leg trousers are having a serious moment, and this outfit feels both classic and very current.

Patterns Used:
- Seamwork Fig Cardigan* – This simple cardigan works beautifully worn open or closed like a top. Buttons, snaps, or no closure at all—it’s very flexible to make it just right for yourself. I wou
- Seamwork Noah Trousers* – A fantastic wide-leg trouser pattern that looks incredible in structured fabrics. I’ve made these previously and I love the detail of the welt front pocket.
Fabric Pairings:
- Ribbed sweater knit in a deep garnet red for the cardigan from EOS
- Bold wool plaid suiting in purple and red for the trousers also from EOS
✨ Pro tip: If you are sewing with wool, I suggest you line the trousers for comfort. If that idea scares you, I have a full tutorial on adding a lining to pants with a fly. No need to be scared to tackle that upgrade when I’m right there with you!
Look #2: French-Inspired Sweater Dress
This Sézane look is so classic and feminine and I think it's perfect for winter layering. I found that new-to-me French pattern company, Clématisse, does a great job recreating these garments. I immediately fell in love.

Pattern Used:
- Clématisse “Meline” Dress* – A near-exact dupe for the Sézane inspiration with 2 collar versions and 2 skirt slit options.
Fabric Pairing:
- Italian cozy brushed sweater knit in navy from Stylemaker Fabrics
This is one of those dresses that works with tights and boots now, then easily transitions to sneakers or heels as the seasons change. Pop on a sweater or jacket for an extra layer. Cozy, flattering, and quietly sexy if you want it to be 😉
Look #3: Button-Up, Sweater Vest & Cropped Trousers
This one is very my style (even though I’d personally add more color). The neutral palette is timeless, though, and the silhouette is perfection.

Patterns Used:
- Love Notions Aria Button-Down Shirt* – Relaxed, easy, and great for casual shirting
- Love Notions Evanston Vest* – Use the round neckline, longer length, and skip the pockets
- Love Notions Bridget Trousers* – Crop and widen the leg for that modern look (I’ll show you how to widen the leg on the Bridget HERE)
Fabric Pairings:
- White cotton shirting from Stylemaker Fabrics
- Camel plush sweater double knit from Stylemaker Fabrics for the vest
- Ponte* in Midnight from Mood Fabric for the trousers
This is one of those outfits that feels endlessly wearable—and very tempting to recreate
Look #4: Plaid Wrap Mini Skirt + Moto Jacket
Marissa, the TKS Social Media Manager, pinned this one, and I immediately loved the juxtaposition—girly plaid paired with an edgy moto jacket.

Patterns Used:
- Cashmerette Canton Moto Jacket* – A classic that never goes out of style. And I have a full sew-along on YouTube!
- Viki Sews Haida Wrap Skirt – Asymmetric, modern, and perfect as a mini
Fabric Pairings:
- Faux leather* from Minerva for the jacket
- Cotton-blend plaid suiting from Stylemaker Fabrics for the skirt
This is a great example of mixing textures and styles for a look that feels intentional and fun.
Look #5: Plaid Scarf Coat
This Totême-inspired look is a cozy classic that is showing up everywhere. The details elevate the jacket and it’s actually a surprisingly approachable coat project.

Pattern Used:
- Seamwork Ivy Jacket* – mimics this look brilliantly!
Fabric & Details:
- Double-sided wool from Stylemaker Fabrics
- Faux leather bias binding for the edges (also from Stylemaker Fabrics)
- Black leather frog toggles for closure
Because this jacket is unlined with minimal pattern pieces, it’s a fantastic entry point into coat sewing—especially if you’re comfortable working with bias binding. Or add your own twist and crochet the edges!
Look #6: Lace Blouse for Winter Layering
Another Sézane-inspired look that feels delicate but totally wearable year-round.

Pattern Used:
Fabric Ideas:
- White eyelet from Stylemaker Fabrics
- Guipure lace
- Or a thrifted lace tablecloth for a sustainable twist (check the linen closet, you may just have the the perfect piece!)
Layer this under cardigans, blazers, or even sweaters so the collar and cuffs peek out. It’s a beautiful way to bring texture into winter outfits.
Look #7: Colorful Scrap-Knit Cardigan
Jenni sent me this one and said, “This is so you.” She was not wrong. I love this one because it's the perfect idea to use up some of those larger knit remnants that are just too small for a whole project, but too big to throw away.

Pattern Used:
- Jennifer Lauren Handmade Juniper Cardigan – Cropped with a bottom band (perfect for color blocking)
Fabric Pairings:
- Rib knits in garnet red and bubblegum pink from Surge Fabrics
- Heavy rib knit for cuffs, neckline, and hem band from Surge Fabrics
This is a dream scrap-buster project and an instant mood booster in the middle of winter. You can customize it to your favorite colors to match everything in your closet.
Look #8: Elevated Athleisure Lounge Set
For those deep-winter days when you want comfort and style. So cozy and so fashionable.

Patterns Used:
- Viki Sews Annora Top – Oversized with a dramatic collar
- Made for Mermaids Winnie Pants – Add the pintuck detail for polish
Fabric Pairing:
- Plush sweater double knit from Stylemaker Fabrics
Matching lounge sets just feel more put-together—even when you’re basically hibernating.
Look #9: Winter Whites with a Spring Lean
This one starts to tip toward spring, but I love winter whites year-round. This outfit is perfect for those break in cloudy, cold days where you just want to lighten and brighten up a bit.

Patterns Used:
- Seamwork Garnet Top* – Beginner-friendly with a bow-blouse look
- Merchant & Mills Heroine Jeans
Fabric Pairings:
- Cotton chambray shirting* from Mood Fabrics for the top
- White denim* from Mood Fabrics
This outfit transitions beautifully from winter into early spring with just a few layering tweaks.
Look #10: Faux Fur Leopard Statement Jacket
This one is pure fun—and yes, I want it. I think it would be my daily jacket because it would just be like wearing a smile.

Pattern Used:
- Maker’s Atelier Faux Fur Jacket is almost the exact dupe for this inpsiration
Fabric:
- Faux leopard fur from Stylemaker Fabrics
✨ Faux fur tip: Cut from the back with scissors (not a rotary cutter), choose patterns with minimal seams, and keep the shop vac nearby.
This jacket instantly elevates a basic jeans-and-sweater outfit and makes winter dressing feel exciting again.
