My New York City Capsule Wardrobe
There’s something so satisfying about packing a carry-on and knowing every single piece inside works together. That was the goal for this New York City trip—and I have to say, this capsule really delivered.
Four days, wildly fluctuating spring weather, lots of walking (we’re talking 20,000+ steps a day), and a mix of casual outings and slightly dressier moments meant this wardrobe had to work hard. I wanted comfort, flexibility, and pieces that felt like me—colorful, layered, and completely me-made. Read on or watch here:
The Challenges: Packing Smart for NYC in Spring
Before I even picked out a single garment, I had a few key things to solve:
- Carry-on only: No checked luggage, which meant being intentional (and leaving room for shopping!)
- Unpredictable weather: Temps ranged from the 50s to 70s—with wind off the Hudson River and chilly shade between buildings
- A flexible schedule: Casual daytime exploring, a theater night, and nicer dinners
- Walking everywhere: Comfort was absolutely non-negotiable
This is where a capsule wardrobe really shines—everything mixes, layers, and adapts.
My Capsule Formula (With a Twist)
I usually follow a simple formula:
- 3 tops
- 2 bottoms
- 1 topper
But for this trip, I tweaked it slightly for extra layering options:
- 5 tops
- 2 bottoms
- 2 layering pieces
- 1 jacket
- 3 pairs of shoes
That flexibility made all the difference.
The Tops: Mix, Match, and Layer
Fitted T-Shirts (The Workhorses)
I brought three fitted tees because they layer beautifully and work with both bottoms.
- Cashmerette Concord* (Boat Neck Hack) – long sleeve stripe + red version
- Cashmerette Carlie* – in a soft, drapey modal jersey
These were the backbone of the wardrobe. Easy to tuck, easy to layer, and perfect for adjusting to temperature changes.
Button-Ups (For Style + Versatility)
- Cashmerette Vernon* (White Linen Blend)
Brought specifically for a slightly dressier theater night and dinner. Clean, classic, and polished. - Vernon* + Swanton Hack* (Chambray with Ruffles)
This one is very me. Feminine details, great for layering, and instantly elevates a casual outfit.
The Bottoms: Simple and Strategic
Wide-Leg Jeans (Ready-to-Wear)
A casual staple that worked with every top.
This piece was such a standout.
- Worn multiple times
- Comfortable for all-day wear
- Got so many compliments
And honestly, wearing something colorful in a sea of black, gray, and navy felt really fun and very New York in my own way.
The Layers: The Real MVPs
Cashmerette Brookhaven Sweatshirt*
- Bright red
- Slightly cropped (perfect with both bottoms)
- Polished thanks to the collar
This was such a great casual layer that still felt put-together.
Lightweight Cashmere Sweater (Ready to Wear)
Perfect for:
- Tossing on in the morning chill
- Taking off and stuffing into a bag later
Lightweight layers like this are essential for travel.
The Star: Cashmerette Kimball Bomber*
This jacket absolutely stole the show.
- Textured jacquard with an embroidered feel
- On-trend with what I was seeing all over the city
- Comfortable, warm, and easy to style
I got compliments on this constantly, and it worked with every single outfit.

Being able to switch shoes each day made a huge difference in comfort.
Real Outfits: How It All Came Together
Here’s how the capsule played out in real life:
- Travel Day: Jeans + Concord tee + Brookhaven sweatshirt
- Day 1 Exploring: Osgood skirt + Carlie tee + Kimball bomber (+ sweater early morning)
- Theater Night: Osgood skirt + white Vernon + espadrilles

Everything mixed effortlessly, and I wore every single piece.

Why This Capsule Worked So Well
A few things made this especially successful:
✔️ Everything Fit Well
When your clothes fit, everything else gets easier. No adjusting, no discomfort—just wearing and enjoying.
✔️ A Consistent Color Palette
Because I sew within my palette (hello, Color Guru Copper Spring 🎨), everything automatically worked together.
If you’ve ever struggled with mixing outfits, this is a game changer—and you can get 10% off* with code TOMKATCOLOR.
✔️ Layers, Layers, Layers
This was the biggest win. Being able to add or remove pieces throughout the day made the wardrobe incredibly functional.
✔️ Style That Felt Like Me
Colorful, slightly bold, a little feminine, a little structured—this capsule didn’t just work, it felt like home.
Final Thoughts
This was one of those trips where getting dressed was just… easy. No second-guessing, no discomfort, no “I wish I had packed something else.”
Everything worked. Everything got worn. And I felt confident the entire time—which, honestly, is the whole point.
If you’ve been thinking about creating a travel capsule wardrobe, this is your sign. Start with pieces you love, stick to a palette, and give yourself layering options—you’ll be amazed how far a small wardrobe can go.
